Governor McDonnell has declared September as Virginia Bicyclist and Pedestrian Awareness Month. “Bicyclists, motorists and pedestrians have mutual rights and responsibilities and should offer each other mutual respect while traveling on the roadways of Virginia,” McDonnell said in the proclamation.
The theme of the 2013 campaign is SEE AND BE SEEN and VISIBILITY = SAFETY.
When bicyclists and pedestrians are illuminated, they’re easier to see.
Whether you’re walking, running or cycling you need to be visible.
- Bright color clothing.
- Reflective fabric.
- Flashlights or bike lights.
Distracted drivers are dangerous to people who bike and walk. When drivers focus on driving, everyone on the road is safer. Slow down and give lots of space (three feet plus) when passing bicyclists and pedestrians.
